As Eduardo Azanza, CEO and Co\u2011Founder of Veridas, warned, <strong><em>\u201cwe have a pandemic of fraud generated and fueled by generative AI.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> This technology didn\u2019t create fraud\u2014it industrialised it, enabling automatic, scalable and nearly invisible attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/veridas.com\/en\/identity-fraud-report-2025\/\"><b>Veridas Identity Fraud Report 2025 <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirms this trend:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.4% of identity verifications show injection activity \u2013 fraud that hides inside systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u20136% of verifications are fraudulent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI already drives 41% of attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$9.5\u202ftrillion is the global annual cost of cybercrime\u2014equivalent to the third largest economy on the planet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These figures demand not only specialised solutions, but also a robust and secure cloud infrastructure that acts as the foundation of that defence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google Cloud provides that technological base: a platform combining artificial intelligence, machine learning and anomaly\u2011detection capabilities that anticipate threats and protect the most critical systems. Of the three, biometrics is the only one that links the digital identity to the real person.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikel S\u00e1nchez explained how fraud has evolved from in\u2011person attacks to massive, automated campaigns, highlighting three essential defence types:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>PAD (Presentation Attack Detection):<\/strong> blocks attacks using photos, masks or videos.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>IAD (Injection Attack Detection):<\/strong> counters invisible attacks that inject false evidence directly into the system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>MAD (Massive Attack Detection):<\/strong> detects industrial\u2011scale coordinated attacks.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also innovative are the Renewable Biometric References (RBRs), which guarantee full privacy according to three principles: irreversibility, multiplicity and non\u2011interoperability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/WiTgHDjzi4s?si=Ja757IMirYKTkguz&amp;t=1924\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-105672\" src=\"https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37.png 1920w, https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/veridas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/37-1536x1024.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Regulation, sovereignty and the new European framework<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The event also addressed the geopolitical and regulatory dimensions of fraud. The concept of digital sovereignty\u2014Europe\u2019s ability to protect its own data and critical systems\u2014was at the heart of the discussion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Raquel Poncela (FNMT)<\/strong> delivered a master\u2011class on the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI\u202fWallet), a key component of the new eIDAS 2.0 Regulation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cBy Christmas 2027, the private sector will be required to accept the European Digital Identity wallet as a means of identification.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principle is revolutionary: citizens will own their data. The \u201cattributes\u201d (such as degrees, policies or bank accounts) will be in the hands of the user and non\u2011transferable. Non\u2011compliance fines could reach 2% of global turnover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The debate on Europe\u2019s digital sovereignty cannot be separated from technological security. In this regard, <strong>Jos\u00e9 Carlos T\u00e9rez (Google\u202fCloud)<\/strong> reminded us that security must be \u201cby default and by design,\u201d <strong>emphasising that sovereignty is also built on the ability to operate and protect data from within Europe<\/strong>. How can you maintain security without losing users?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> V\u00edctor de las Heras (ID\u202fFinance)<\/strong> shared a telling insight: moving antifraud verification to the end of the registration process led to a drastic drop in abandonment rates. <strong>Pablo L\u00f3pez (Trade\u202fRepublic)<\/strong> stressed that security should not feel like a burden, but like a protection the customer values. <strong>\u00c1lvaro Mancilla (Permiso)<\/strong> proposed adding more context to processes: <em><strong>\u201cThe more context you provide, the harder it is to fake.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The consensus was clear: regulation is not an obstacle\u2014it\u2019s an opportunity.
