Voice biometrics is a technology that uses a person’s unique voice characteristics to verify their identity. Veridas’ Voice Authentication Solution captures a short audio sample (as little as 3 seconds) to create a biometric voiceprint during the enrollment phase. When the user needs to authenticate themselves later, a new audio sample is captured and compared to the stored voiceprint to verify their identity securely and quickly.

The creation of a biometric reference involves several key steps:

  • Audio Collection: The process begins by obtaining an audio sample of the person’s voice. This is essential for ensuring the real identity of the individual, as detailed in the various methods of biometric voice registration.
  • Biometric Processing: The collected audio is then sent to a biometric engine. This engine performs signal processing on the audio sample.
  • Voice Vector Generation: The biometric engine produces a voice vector, which is a mathematical representation of the individual’s unique biometric characteristics. This vector, referenced as (x1, y1, z1…), is private and anonymous, meaning that the original voice cannot be reconstructed from this vector.

There are five main methods for biometric voice registration:

  • During User Onboarding: Voice registration can be part of the digital onboarding process. The user provides a photo of their ID and a selfie, which are verified for authenticity, and records 5 seconds of their voice via an app or website. This method is used by FC Barcelona for fan registration through Veridas solutions.
  • Remotely within a Private Area: The user logs in to a private area of an app or website and consents to voice recording. They then record 5 seconds of their voice, which is linked to their account.
  • Through a Contact Center: The user provides basic identification details (like name, address, or a key position) over a call. Once verified by the contact center, the user’s voice is registered for future authentication.
  • Using Previous Recordings: Existing recorded audios can be used if the client already has stored voice data, such as from a prior vocal biometric authentication solution.
  • In-Person Registration: The user visits a branch or office, where an agent verifies their identity (e.g., via an ID document) and obtains consent to record the voice. The user then records 5 seconds of voice using an app, website, phone, or other recording method.
